Spanish Federation of Friends of Museums

Is a nonprofit institution which was created in 1983. Its principals promoters were members of the Friends of the Museums of Catalonia and Friends of the Prado Museum. They detected the need to promote a National Federation to bring together all the associations with the same objectives, in order to be represented within the World Federation of Friends of Museums.

The FEAM is a full member since the founding of the World Federation of Friends of Museums, an institution that brings together federations of Friends from 28 countries, with over 2 million members.

What are our main goals?

• Promote initiatives that arise in society related to museums and cultural heritage.

• Integrate and support member associations.

• Represent the sector of Friends of Museums before public and private, domestic and foreign organisms.

• Encourage the creation and development of new partnerships.

• Acting as a forum for exchanging knowledge and experience between partnerships.

• Promote research in the museum environment.

• Promote the participation of society in cultural life involving the citizen as an active member in your environment.

• Raising public awareness about the heritage / historic and artistic legacy.

• Create an international network of collaboration among responsible citizens interested in culture.

Today more than 123 associations belong to the Spanish Federation of Friends of Museums, that represent over 40000 Friends all over the peninsula.

Associations of Friends

An Association of Friends of Museums is a group of people that get involved and organized around a museum in order to support it.

The profile of these people is diverse: from professionals to students, family groups, retirees, businesses, benefactors... . Today more than 40,000 Friends support in different ways spanish museums.

The work of the associations of Friends strengthens the management of museums and may facilitate the implementation of its functions. The ways of collaboration are consistent with the characteristics of each museum and the possibilities of each association of Friends, but in all cases able to carry the voice from the specialist to the visitor and vice versa.

The code developed by the World Federation of Friends of Museums regulates key aspects of the relationship between museums and Friends: "Friends and volunteers of museums seek lofty goals of cultural development and made available their support, their knowledge, their skills and their competence to museum institutions." Activities of the Associations of Friends

Friends associations collaborate with museums by organizing activities such as conferences, courses and guided tours, sponsoring exhibitions, catalogs and publications, developing advertising campaigns, addressing information and sale points in the museum and the organization of educational visits for schoolchildren.

In turn, people who are part of an association of friends, get some advantages, such as, for example, private viewing public exhibitions after hours, the ability to use library materials restricted by the institution itself, the preferred booking cultural activities or discounts on courses, workshops and field trips organized by the association.

Become a Friend of a Museum

The Spanish Federation of Friends of Museums brings together 123 associations of Friends in Spain.

Each offers its members different activities, from trips to courses, conferences, publications and discounts on tours. In addition, by belonging to the Federation, its members may apply for the license of FEAM, which allows the bearer free admission to 28 museums in Spain together with other discounts and benefits.
